NTL - part of a phone/cable/broadband package.

Pro's : good value package; commection seems reliable enough

Con's : NTL's infamous, loathsome "customer service"

Also on Demon. Have to say it is very good, the time it took for my order to process, connection, speed, no limits, no peak times etc.

God damn annoying thing is I'm paying 20 quid for 2mb, but i can only get 576k in my area "no"

I can't see why this would be. How do you know these are the speeds you are getting?

If you are using a reliable speed tester, you should get on to your ISP ASAP, you are being robbed.

The only reason you should be recieving such poor speeds is if you are out in the middle of nowhere, miles away from your local exchange. If this was the case your ISP should not of sold you a 2meg package.

I'm on BT Broadband myself.

BT Broadband too. But limited to half meg due to distance from exchange. This is major factor with whatever any other ISP's may offer as well, and if you read the small print on any flyers or advertising, there is always the disclaimer *Up to 2Mb.
It all depends on where you live in relation to your local exchange - and not necessarily shortest distance as the crow flies or by car. It's the cable length and how it is routed to avoid rivers/major roads or other obstacles etc....

Or was that a bit too much info ??

Spot on mate.

Except it is also down to the diameter of the wires running from the exchange to your house.

People get misled by the way some ISP's word their packages. Bulldog were boasting 8 meg packages, but have now had to change the wording to Up to 8 meg as you would have to be living next door to the local exchange to recieve such speeds.

You must be out in the sticks.

I am guessing that cable is also out of the question?

I was on AOL Platinum until i moved house and they messed around with my connection so much that i ended up leaving and joining BT broadband. I've now signed up to talk talk and as soon as my twelve months is up with BT i'll be swithching to the talk talk broadband package.

BT 1M

Have been on it for years. It has been fine.

Don't have cable here anyway.

Considering changing sometime, just for the change. Demon feedback is inteesting. Do I need cable for that?

@pat - demon are very stable, and have been around years. they are predominently business orientated but have expanded more into consumer areas recently. they send you a couple of micro-chips to insert (like the standard connector, not hard) in your phone line box, and hey presto! it interferes with nothing and for £19.99 month 2mb isnt bad. i just like the reliability and speed of it.
my mate is with bulldog who are similar in many respects, but may even be cheaper; i'll be trying them in the summer i think, but am reluctant to bin demon as they've been brilliant. **thumbup

Thanks for that Proccy. You don't happen to know whether they support home network do you? I have a two PC net here at present, with a BT provided router/hub. Couldn't find anyting quickly on demon's web page. Need to do more delving I think.
